Home Exercise Equipment Report - Reviewing the Schwinn Active Series 20 Recumbent Bike

Exercise bikes are one of the staples in the home fitness equipment market. In spite of this, they remain a popular choice, especially for those new to working out or recovering from injury. They offer a low-impact form of exercise, and many of them are quite affordable.

There are dozens of models on the market, but the Schwinn Active Series 20 Recumbent Bike is a consumer favorite that offers solid value at a good price. In this article, we'll review this particular bike in more detail.

What is a Recumbent Bike?

With a recumbent, the seat is designed to offer plenty of back support, unlike an upright, which utilizes merely a saddle. If you suffer from back pain or lumbar issues, a good recumbent model can enable you to enjoy a cardiovascular workout without placing undue strain on your back.

Schwinn Active Series 20 - Key Features

This Schwinn exercise bike is packed with plenty of user-friendly features. It provides eight levels of Eddy current brake resistance, which ensures that you'll remain challenged even as you develop more endurance and strength.

Workout variety is important on any piece of exercise equipment, to keep boredom from settling in. The Series 20 Recumbent comes with eleven pre-installed workouts. This includes a manual program, six preset profile workouts, and four heart-rate based programs.

Speaking of heart rate monitoring--the Active Series 20 uses grip heart rate sensors. Pulse sensors are not as accurate as wireless chest monitors, and unfortunately, this exercise bike isn't compatible with wireless heart rate systems, either. However, at the very affordable price point for this product, you have to sacrifice a few bells-and-whistles.

Nevertheless, this bicycle is built for comfort. The sturdy frame can accommodate users who weigh up to 275 pounds. The seat is extra wide and padded, and can be adjusted to nine different positions, allowing users of various heights to easily pedal.

The LCD display offers standard feedback. It measures speed, elapsed time, distance traveled, calories burned, and pulse rate, among other metrics.

Warranty coverage is decent for a product at this price. You'll get three years on the frame, and six months on non-expandable mechanical and electric parts.

Schwinn Series 20 Recumbent - Key Benefits

This recumbent bike offer many benefits, especially for those just starting an exercise program. It is easy to assemble, and simple to operate. The belt-drive system runs smooth and quiet, allowing you to watch TV or listen to music while you exercise.

And as with other exercise bicycles, you'll enjoy a low-impact workout. This is an important consideration if you are recovering from injury, or suffer from joint pain or back problems.

Last but not least, this product is affordable. You can find it available for under 0 on many retail web sites.

Schwinn Active Series 20 Review Summary

This Schwinn recumbent bike is a sturdy, well-designed stationary bicycle with basic, useful features. If you're seeking a low-impact cardiovascular workout, and you don't want to spend a fortune, this one is definitely worth a look.

In Depth - Road Bikes Vs Triathlon Bikes

In Depth - Road Bikes Vs Triathlon Bikes

I am constantly asked what the big differences are between road bikes and triathlon bikes. The obvious difference is the fact that one races a triathlon in an aero position, but sometimes we see aerobars on road bikes so what is the real difference? There is a smaller difference between uci legal time trial bikes and triathlon bikes, though they look very similar. The short answer is, road bikes are designed to have three hand positions, triathlon bikes are designed to have one. Just because a road bike has clip on aerobars, it does not imply that it is a purpose built triathlon bike.

Draft legal triathlons are the one area where a road bike is used with little stub aerobars, but positionally speaking, I call them road bikes. They are designed to be able to do all that a road racing bike does and in fact, bicycle racers use the aero position of a draft legal triathletes all the time.

Time trial bikes that are uci legal have saddles that are set back further than triathlon bikes. The bike is setup so the rider has to actually ride on the nose of the saddle (on the rivet, as they say) to get the proper balance point for the effort being produced. The harder one pedals, the farther forward their balance point moves.  Since a time trialist is racing at max effort, the most efficient position is in front of the comfortable point on the saddle, so riders just tough it out. They don't have to be comfortable and their events are rarely longer than about an hour so who cares?

Triathlon bikes are designed to be ridden for longer distances and at a submaximal pace. This means that the rider will be putting more weight on the saddle and aerobars because they are not pounding the pedals hard enough to support themselves. As such, the saddle and aerobars are located in the place the rider is the most efficient or most aerodynamic. The reason I distinguish between the two is traditional triathlon positions are very far forward to accommodate a triathlete's greater hip angle needs and to allow a super aero position.

My problem with this position is twofold. First, the position is not powerful and many triathletes give up more power than is gained by pure aerodynamics. Second, the further forward one is positioned relative to their balance point, the more front loading occurs on the knees and overcompensation by quadriceps occurs. This muscle imbalance is paid for in the transition and the start of the run.

The perfect triathlon position is the one where the rider is as strong and aero as possible, with enough comfort to be able to stay in the aerobars the entire event. This is a biggie. If you have to sit up during a race to rest because the aero position is not sustainable, you have a problem. You will be going slower and you will be more fatigued in the run. Remember, though, power trumps aerodynamics to a point, so your best position may not be where you think it is!

Since the position on the bike and the setup of the bike to support that position are the two defining differences between a road bike and a triathlon bike, what about all the aero tubing on some frames and the round tubes on others? Some frame manufacturers advertise how fast their frames are based on wind tunnel testing, but I think that is a lot of marketing hype for the most part. Here is a critical fact: The part of the time trial or triathlon bike that creates the most drag is the rider! The frame is inside the boundary layer and as such doesn't make as big a contribution to aerodynamics as one might think.

The concept of a boundary layer is a tough one so imagine the air right next to you going the speed you are, and at a certain point away from your body (and the bike) the air is undisturbed. There is a "layer" of air that transitions from no disturbance to actually going your speed, as the layer of air molecules that touch your skin are doing. The stuff in between is the "boundary layer."  In my industrial design career, I remember designing a part that went on a boeing 777, and I remember learning the boundary layer was 13" thick at the point in question. This means that the 2" part that was sticking out of the fuselage had virtually no real aerodynamic detriment!

What all this means is, a road bike with aero tubing still won't be as fast as a triathlon bike with round tubing, assuming the rider has a good position! What this also means is, the aerobars, fork and front wheel have a huge impact on aerodynamics as they are outside the boundary layer. Some very fast ironman finishes occur with people riding round tube triathlon bikes, but you can bet they are positioned correctly and have good wheels, aerobars and front fork.

At the end of the day, there is a lot to a good triathlon bike. The first thing, positioning, is the most critical. Second, great wheels are important. Third, having a good set of integrated aerobars that have the shifters at the ends of the aerobars is important. Next, hydration. Frame bottles or aerobar bottles / hydration systems are much better than those behind the saddle. You have to move around to reach back and get those saddle mounted bottles, so that is an area that could yield good results.

Triathletes are in charge of all of the aspects for all three disciplines in the sport. The bike is so critical and yet so overlooked it is not surprising that much bad information travels around the transition area. When you are sitting around the cooler after a race, and someone says that "Brand X" bike won 10 ironman's, remember, the bike frame didn't win the race. The athlete did, who had the best time in all three legs!

How to Get Started Cycling

How to Get Started Cycling

Cycling is becoming an extremely popular way to keep fit and to lose weight as more and more people realise the benefits of it.

My Mentor, Roy Savery, is one of the fastest cyclists in the world for his age group. He trains by cycling really fast for at least a couple of hours most days.

I used to cycle a lot myself - cycling to and from work and going out on Club rides at the weekends and touring in the holidays. I found it a great way to keep fit and exhilarating and it gives you a great feeling of accomplishment after completing a long ride.

However, you can cycle for general fitness without having to do gruelling training runs like Roy. It has so many advantages to many other ways of keeping fit. For example, the weight of your body is taken by the bike whereas with jogging all that pounding goes through your body and puts a strain on the joints.

Cycling is a very enjoyable way to keep fit and lose weight. You can also easily incorporate it into your daily lifestyle by doing the daily commute or by nipping down to the shops. If you join a club it can also be a very social way to keep fit.

Here are some tips to help you get started cycling:

* A study of more than 10,000 people found that those who cycle at least 20 miles a week are half as likely to have heart problems as those who don't cycle.

* If you want a bike for riding mainly on the road, a hybrid bike with road tyres is probably the best bike to get. If you're buying a new bike, don't buy a mountain bike unless you intend to ride off road.

* It's important to have a saddle that's comfortable for you. Leather saddles used to be extremely popular for this as over time they would mould themselves to your shape. The downside of them is that it takes time to break them in and meanwhile they can be uncomfortable, they need to be oiled from time to time, which can stain your clothes, and they can be ruined by the rain.

Saddles with gel padding are very popular because they mould themselves to your shape without needing to have a breaking in period.

* It's very important for comfortable riding to have the saddle set to the correct height. To check this out sit on the saddle with the peddle at it's lowest point. Put your heel on the peddle and there should be a slight bend in the knee. If not then adjust your saddle accordingly.

* The secret to enjoyable cycling is to spin low gears. This means to select a gear that you can comfortably pedal with. Do not push really hard on the peddles in a high gear. This puts pressure on the joints and can become painful. With cycling it is NOT true to say "no pain, no gain".

* If you're going do a lot of cycling then it's worth getting special cycling shorts or long trousers. These are cut in a different way from ordinary shorts so that the seams are in a different place to make them more comfortable. I found that cotton underwear with made-to-measure corduroy shorts or trousers was a very comfortable combination. If you decide on padded shorts then you shouldn't wear underwear with them.

* Build endurance by cycling regularly. Cycle at least twice per week to get the full benefit from it.

* Burn fat by increasing your intensity, going faster, doing sprints or intervals. Do this by riding as hard as you can for two minutes then take it easy for two minutes and repeat this sequence a few times.

If you get started cycling in this way you'll get fit, keep fit, lose weight and have an enjoyable time doing it.

Bicycle Saddle - How to Get Started Cycling

Selecting the Right Bicycle Saddle

Selecting the Right Bicycle Saddle

Choosing the correct bicycle saddle is an important step when looking for the perfect bike. One needs to remember that the seat carries the burden of the bike - namely the rider and more than 50% of his or her weight. Not only do they need to be comfortable, but they also need to wear well. It needs to made of a good material so if the bike falls to the ground, marks are not made or it does not deteriorate from the friction of sitting on it for a long ride. It is a good idea to test bicycle saddles before committing to one and here are a few things to consider when looking to purchase:

PADDING

There are a couple of types of padding that are most commonly used on bike seats - polymer gels and urethane foam. Both are typically molded on the seat however each model of seat has different thicknesses and density depending the seat model. Sometimes both types of padding are used on one seat trying to add different textures to different pressure points, however more padding does not necessarily mean that it will be more comfortable. The purpose of padding is to disperse one's weight over the entire seat and sometimes thicker padding can move get lumpy in spots and can actually be more uncomfortable. If one prefers, there are still flyweight saddles that are made without padding.

SHELL DESIGN

The shell of a bike saddle can be made of a few different materials, depending on the flexibility required of the seat. Most saddles are made of plastic which is injection-molded, and typically made of nylon. These seats are usually the least flexible and heaviest so carbon fiber is added to create a lighter and more malleable. There are even a few types of saddles which are made entirely of carbon and are quite light and flexible. In order to make the saddle more comfortable and adjustable, manufacturers have added slots or holes in the nose of the seat which can disperse pressure away from softer tissues. According to Andy Pruitt, Ed. D. of the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine in Colorado, seats with a hole in the nose are more comfortable for approximately 80% of riders, though solid saddles are still preferred by some. If one wants an option other than a carbon or plastic shell, there are a few manufacturers that still use leather which is riveted to the rails.

RAILS

Titanium is the material of choice for today's saddle rails and is found typically on higher-end bicycles. Previously, rails were made cheaply using carbon steel that had been chrome plated, but this made the seat and bike unnecessarily heavy. Another common material is lighter, though strong steels such as chrome-moly, which is usually fashioned in a hollow tubular shape, keeping the bike light. Some more expensive seats have rails made of carbon fiber, but because they can be more easily damaged than steel, they are often wrapped in aluminum. There are still a few companies that have a dedicated seat with a beam system or monorail.

SHAPE

The shape of a seat is perhaps the most important aspect when choosing the perfect saddle. If the seat is too narrow, it will feel like there is not enough support. If it is too wide, however, it will often rub and end up chaffing. For women, a wider seat is typically more comfortable since the sit bones - ischial tuberosities to be technical - are wider than those of males. Since each rider is different some specialty shops have seats that come with special pads which measure the width of the sit bones to make it easier to choose the seat. Some seats are also curved and are rounded while others have squarer sides and a flatter top. There are also seats made for different bicycling purposes. A saddle made for off-roading, for instance is thicker over the whole seat while a seat made for a triathlon as more padding in the front of the nose to help the cyclist sit forward.

COVERING

The covering can vary greatly on bicycle saddles. They can be made from materials such as plastic, fabric, leather or even Kevlar on more expensive seats and can come in many different and personalized colors, though typically black fades and wears the least. In order to keep the rider from sliding around, some seat coverings have tiny holes to add friction. Saddles made for off-roading are usually made with durable materials and reinforced corners since they are heavily used.
